Civil
and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto:
Providing Leadership in Urban Solutions |
19/10/07
- The
Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto
is home to two very distinct undergraduate engineering programs:
the Civil Engineering Program and the Lassonde Mineral Engineering
Program.
Although
the two programs are quite unique, we share a number of
commonalities. The most important of which is our vision
for the future. We envision ourselves as providing the necessary
leadership in sustainable global development and in educating
the very best and brightest students who will become tomorrow’s
leaders.
Civil
and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto also
share a common interest in Urban Engineering. The world
of the 21st century is going to be an urban one, and how
we deal with urban issues will directly determine the quality
of our lives. In fact, we consider Civil and Mineral Engineers
to be the primary health providers of society! We are recognized
as an international and national leader in many aspects
of Urban Engineering, including sustainable infrastructure,
environmental and societal stewardship, technology and social
development, and urban transportation.
We
also have major strengths in the core technologies required
to build and maintain healthy cities:
infrastructure renewal/rehabilitation
intelligent transportation systems
water treatment, structural design
underground geoscience
concrete materials
building science
and construction management
Scholarships
For
international students we have dedicated several prestigious
entrance scholarships valued at up to $4,000 (Cdn) each.
Candidates for these scholarships will be chosen based primarily
on academic excellence, however, several other factors will
also be taken into consideration, including: demonstrated
leadership skills, volunteer activities, and extra curricular
activities (such as sports, school clubs, etc.). There is
no separate application for these scholarships, all students
who apply for admission and who meet the criteria will be
considered automatically. Successful candidates will be
notified at the time of their admission offer.
What
is Civil Engineering?
Civil
Engineering is the art of applying scientific and mathematical
principles, experience, ingenuity and common sense to develop
and maintain the infrastructure that supports all human
activities while protecting and improving our natural environment.
Civil Engineers interface between the needs of society,
protection of the environment, and the infrastructure that
makes civilization possible. We design, build and operate
the infrastructure that is often take for granted, including
buildings for working and living, transportation systems,
water supply and treatment systems, pollution control and
waste management systems. But to achieve this, we must work
with people and with society in general!
What is Mineral Engineering?
Mineral
Engineering is a branch of Engineering Geoscience, the science
of man's interaction with the earth. It is the interdisciplinary
study, development and design of subsurface space for a
host of applications: mining, oil and gas exploration, hydroelectric
projects, tunnels and subways, subsurface storage facilities,
underground urban and shopping spaces.
Mineral
engineers design subsurface infrastructures that rely on
a comprehensive understanding of complex rock mechanics
problems. They work across the globe to discover and develop
valuable mineral resources, design the excavation and blasting
methods, and engineer the plants and facilities, all in
an environmentally responsible manner. They also design
subsurface urban infrastructure that is necessary in the
evolution of cities, transmission of utilities, and transportation
such as subways and train tunnels.
The
U of T Advantage!
The
University of Toronto is Canada's largest and most distinguished
university, and is consistently ranked Canada's top research-intensive
university. We are internationally reknowned for the quality
of our education and the expertise of our graduates. Our
library has over 15 million holdings and is one of the top
4 research libraries in North America. U of T has over 6,000
international students, about nine per cent of our student
population of more than 67,000 students. But the academic
and collegial structure allows students to feel they are
part of a small community. For more information about the
University of Toronto, please visit www.news.utoronto.ca/facts.asp.
Professional
Experience Year (PEY)
PEY is a 12 – 16 month internship program in which
you may choose to participate after your 2nd or 3rd year.
Participation in this program allows you to gain some valuable
work experience and earn some money. Check out the PEY website
at (www.pey.utoronto.ca) to get more information and to
check out profiles of previous participants.
The
Jeffrey Skoll BASc/MBA Program
This
unique program, recently established by the Faculty of Applied
Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management
at the University of Toronto, provides a fast track for
gifted students to earn their Bachelor's degree in engineering,
a PEY, a management internship, and an MBA in six years
and eight months. For more information go to: www.rotman.utoronto.ca/skoll/
Residence/Accommodation

Student
Life
Toronto
is a global city, a city that welcomes visitors, students
and immigrants from all over the world to contribute to
the multicultural environment that we are so proud of. The
University of Toronto is thus a global university. We have
dedicated staff at the International Students Centre that
are able to assist international students with all of their
non-academic inquiries, from adjusting to life in Canada
to information on visas, housing, health care, and even
a “buddy program” that matches international
students with current students to help in the adjustment.
Please visit www.isc.utoronto.ca/ for more information U
of T places great emphasis on the student experience, and
has more than 340 student clubs and organizations on all
three campuses and innumerable activities ranging from cultural
events at Hart House to intercollegiate and intramural sporting
activities. In Engineering, the Engineering Society represents
all undergraduate engineering students, is responsible for
organizing numerous special events such as Orientation,
intramural sports, and hosting the weekly pub.
The
Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, through its student
chapter, organizes technical presentations, field expeditions
and a very successful Annual Career Fair, where industry
representatives are invited to talk to students about opportunities
in the industry. The Civil and Mineral Clubs organize and
host student social events such as movie nights and the
annual CIV/MIN Dinner.
We
are very fortunate to be located in the heart of downtown
Toronto - Canada's most multicultural and cosmopolitan city.
Here you will find every imaginable form of entertainment
- theatre, dance and music; museums and art galleries; bars,
clubs and coffee houses; theme parks and zoos; and professional
sports teams ranked among the best in North America. A wide
